Dr. Foster founded the Immunology and Uveitis Service in 1984 at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and he will continue his affiliation there and with Harvard Medical School, as Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology. This has been a good and rewarding association for Dr. Foster, where he has been able to fully develop his practice, advance research, teach over 100 fellows and most important do his best to preserve the eyesight of patients with severe inflammatory diseases of the eye, including cicatrizing conjunctivitis, keratitis, scleritis, and Uveitis. His long awaited move will enable him to do many things that he has heretofore not been able to do, very much wants to accomplish, and which he can more readily do in the private sector. Dr. Foster will continue to teach and to operate at MEEI, and will continue as Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. His research, both basic laboratory research and clinical research, as well as his training of Ocular Immunology fellows will also continue under the aegis of his new research and education foundation, Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation. Effective March 1, 2005, Dr. Foster will move his practice two blocks from MEEI to 100 Charles River Plaza (165 Cambridge St.), 3rd floor, suite 301, 617-742-6377 or toll free 866-353-6377, where he will operate until July, when he and all of his patients, staff and fellows will have the unique pleasure of opening a new state-of-the-art facility supporting the research, surgery, and treatment of inflammatory diseases of the eye, including Uveitis. Check out the permanent location, 5 Cambridge Center just over the Longfellow Bridge in Kendall Square and only one more T-stop from the MGH/Charles St station on the redline. Dr. Foster is fortunate to have assembled the nation’s foremost experts in practice establishment, Executive Development Center, of Dover, Massachusetts, a practice development firm in its 29th year of operation with experience helping America’s Ophthalmologists in 48 of the 50 states. In addition, no detail has been left to chance; he also has engaged the highly regarded ophthalmic architect and design firm of Eckert-Wordell of Kalamazoo, MI to develop the construction plans for this one-of-a-kind facility.
This name was carefully chosen to reflect what this practice is about, and it is no coincidence that it will be known as MERSI (or Mercy). Dr. Foster has dedicated his entire life to the discovery of treatments that have allowed his patients to continue to see, even when faced with the most destructive of eye diseases, such as cicatrizing conjunctivitis, keratitis, scleritis, and UVEITIS. Just as he has done for the past quarter of a century, he will continue his dedication to research and to teaching Fellows, who will continue to train within MERSI and within the new educational and research foundation which he has formed, The Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation. At the heart of this change, is his desire to have more time to do
these things and to operate his practice in a Patient Centered manner.
When Dr. Foster moves to his permanent location in July, he
will not have a “waiting room” in his new facility;
instead, he will have a comfortable “Reception Room” where
you spend no more than 15 minutes before your medical care begins with
a highly capable, competent and caring staff of professionals, whom
he
knows
without a doubt you will grow to like enormously, as they show their
care and affection for you. These are just a few of the innovations that MERSI will adopt to make your care first, foremost and center of our attention always. MERSI will always be at the very cutting edge of technology, applied research, and knowledge to serve you. The Transition This transition will be exceptionally smooth as a consequence of the involvement of EDC. The move of your service will be seamless and transparent. Dr. Foster wants to share with you that this sea change at this important juncture of his career will allow him to continue with his life’s work and to expand it. As you may know, he is world renown and one of two ophthalmologists in the United States who is a member both of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and of the American College of Rheumatology. He is also one of the very few who prescribe and manage immunosuppressive chemotherapy themselves, both intravenously as well as oral or injectable. His patients and colleagues worldwide recognize his dedication to ocular immunology and as a result, Dr. Foster has been chosen to receive the Mildred Weisenfeld Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology. This award is presented to an individual in recognition of distinguished scholarly contributions to the clinical practice of Ophthalmology. It is one of the most prestigious awards given in Ophthalmology. Thank You Dr. Foster thanks you, both patients and doctors, for your trust and confidence. He looks forward to continue his care for patients with vision-threatening inflammatory or ocular surface diseases of the eye.
