Patient Information: Support Group:

Come join us for the THIRD

Walk for Vision

October 6th, 2007, 8:30 to 3:00 PM

Make a difference in someone’s life one step at a time!

Print this Information

One of the goals of the support group is to raise money for uveitis and ocular inflammatory disease research. The Walk for Vision is back to support Dr. Foster's research. It is a 5k or 3.2 miles around the Charles River in Boston. The event will be followed by a wonderful lunch at the Royal Sonesta Hotel and Support Group Meeting.

Please join the Uveitis/OID Support Group! All proceeds will benefit research related to uveitis and ocular inflammatory disease at the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation. Why this cause? Because destructive inflammatory diseases of the eye, such as uveitis, are the third leading cause of preventable blindness in developed countries. Our goal is to change this.

Who can walk: All are welcome. Walk with your family, friends, and coworkers and help build a cure for uveitis/ocular inflammatory disease. Any company, organization, or individual can participate and get us one step closer to a cure for ocular inflammatory diseases like uveitis. We Walk Rain or Shine!

Spirit Walking – Can’t join us in Boston. You can be a spirit walker. We’ll send you a sponsor form; you can raise money, and do your walk on the same day in your own community. To register, just indicate spirit walking on the registration form or email.

We have a large spirit taking place in Verona, New Jersey. Lauren Jacobs will be organizing the walk at Verona Park on October 14th. If interested, click here

If interested, Please Register: By Fax or Mail or Email ; Registration is free to all those who raise over 50 dollars and otherwise a 35 dollar fee will be collected for registration.

1. If by email: Send name of all walkers, ages, address, telephone number, and email. Indeminification/liability form must be signed and mailed or brought on day of walk. Registration Form

2. Once registration is received sponsor packets will be mailed.

3. Set your fundraising goals and mark the amount of your own pledge on the walker sponsor list. Our goal is at least 500 dollars raised by each walker.

Raising Money Tips: Printable

We hope that each walker strives to raise a minimum of $500.00. If 25 sponsors give 20 dollars, that meets your goal or 10 sponsors give 50 dollars.

Family, friends, coworkers, employers, and local businesses are all good prospects for soliciting donations.

Involve your company: Many companies have a gift matching program. These programs usually match the donations given by an employee.

Create an e-mail campaign: Send a mass e-mail to friends and family letting them know that you are participating in the walk for vision and you need their help to raise money and awareness for the Uveitis/OID Support group.

Fundraising Parties: Host a party at your house or other venue and charge admission. This is a fun way to raise money, create awareness and reach your fundraising goal!

Prizes will be given to the adult and child who raise the most money. The adult prize will be a weekend at the Four Season’s Hotel in Boston, MA. The child’s prize will be announced in the upcoming weeks. At the 2006 Walk, the most money raised by one walker was 4000 dollars. Let’s try to achieve and raise even more in 2007.

Information to give donors about where their money will go:
The Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation (OIUF) is a national non-profit organization, based at the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institution in Cambridge, Massachusetts at 5 Cambridge Center. OIUF is the nation's leading non-profit organization dedicated to finding the causes and cure for ocular inflammatory disease and surface diseases and is the only national organization exclusively serving individuals, families and friends affected by such disorders.

The OIUF mission is to: 1) improve the diagnosis and treatment and find the causes and cures of uveitis and other ocular inflammatory diseases as well as macular degeneration and corneal and scleral diseases, 2) increase awareness among health professionals and the public, and support individuals and families affected by the diseases. Research, education, and patient services are at the heart of OIUF’s mission and programs.

OIUF is currently conducting two research projects funded by NIH grants, 5 other grant supported research projects, and is independently supporting 11 other research projects.
For any more innovative tips or fundraising strategies contact Alison Justus, 617-494-1430 ext 112.
